Celebrity “get togethers” have often been fueled as much by political activism lately as champagne. The 89th Academy awards were no exception with the American Civil Liberties Union making an appearance.
The Oscars are a night of glamour and fantasy; a night for all people to feel as if they are walking on a freshly rolled out red carpet from the comfort of a La-Z-Boy. However, lots of good came out of this event as a platform for change. Something intriguing on Sunday the 26th were the hints of blue satin seen throughout the evening. American Civil Liberties Union ribbons were being sported on the carpet. The small accents sent the meaningful message to viewers “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.” (ACLU Mission Statement.) It was no surprise to see Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and his mother were participating in subtle demonstration as was controversial model-actress Karlie Kloss. The ACLU was also supported by Busy Philipps, Barry Jenkins, and Ruth Negga. The ribbons were a peaceful message in a current political climate destined for thunderstorms. For those who appreciated the sentiment the ACLU can be donated to at https://action.aclu.org/secure/donate-to-aclu .
