Being a professional athlete doesn’t mean you forfeit the right to voice your political opinions, yet, some people  seem to disagree. In a recent interview, Cleveland Cavaliers forward, Lebron James, shared his thoughts on President Trump: “He doesn’t understand the people and doesn’t give a **** about the people”.  James said in response to Trump’s presidency thus far. Later that day, Fox News host Laura Ingraham called out Lebron’s comments, “Keep the political comments to yourself, just shut up and dribble”, stating that his comments were “ungrammatical and unintelligible “. No matter what your job is you should be able give your opinion about politics, a topic which concerns everyone.

Americans should be proud of the athletes in the country who are brave enough to speak up and promote equality – just because James disagrees with Laura Ingraham’s conservative views doesn’t mean he needs to “keep his political comments to himself”. In response, James said: “The best thing she did was to help me create awareness. We will definitely not shut up and dribble… I mean too much to society, too much to the youth, too much to so many kids who feel like they don’t have a way out”.

It is not enough to just talk about equality, our actions must promote it.
